Hypopressives
For Prolapse, Pelvic Floor Issues, Bladder Weakness, Hernia Rehab, Post Surgical Recovery and more.
Hypopressives are a gentle breathing and postural technique designed to reduce pressure inside the abdomen and pelvis. They involve a specific breathing pattern that focuses on ribcage expansion and thoracic breathing, followed by an apnoea breath hold that creates a vacuum effect. This helps activate the deep core and pelvic floor muscles in a completely different way.
How can hypopressives help?
Hypopressives help your body manage internal pressure more efficiently. This means less downward pressure on the pelvic floor, better support for the bladder and bowel, and improved coordination between your breathing muscles and your core. Many people also notice improved posture, reduced lower back tension, and a feeling of “lightness” in the pelvis.
What symptoms or conditions can improve?
In both men and women, hypopressives may help with:
Leakage when coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercising
Prolapse and pelvic heaviness
Feeling the need to rush to the toilet frequently
A sensation of heaviness, dragging, or something descending
Ongoing pelvic pain or a pelvic floor that feels too tight and unable to relax
Separation of the abdominal muscles (diastasis recti)
Low back or sacroiliac pain linked to pressure management within the body
Recovery after prostate surgery or childbirth
How We Work Together
Hypopressives are taught in one-to-one sessions, either in person or online.
To begin, we recommend an initial 75-minute assessment, followed by four 45-minute sessions to help refine your technique and build confidence.
During our sessions, you will:
Gain an understanding of how breathing supports your core and learn how to refine your breathing technique
Learn a step-by-step sequence of eight postures
Be guided closely to ensure you are performing the techniques correctly
Build awareness of how your body responds
Have space to ask questions and feel fully supported
You will also be encouraged to practise between sessions so the techniques become familiar, effective, and easier to integrate into everyday life.
Over time, you will develop a simple lifelong practice that you can return to whenever you need it. Most people incorporate hypopressives into their regular routine, practising two to three times per week to maintain strength, alignment, and long-term results.
Hypopressive treatment sessions are available at our Scarborough and Bridlington clinics, as well as online.
