Hypopressives

For Prolapse, Pelvic Floor Issues, Bladder Weakness, Hernia Rehab, Post Surgical Recovery and more.

Hypopressives are a gentle breathing and postural technique designed to reduce pressure inside the abdomen and pelvis. They involve a specific breathing pattern that focuses on ribcage expansion and thoracic breathing, followed by an apnoea breath hold that creates a vacuum effect. This helps activate the deep core and pelvic floor muscles in a completely different way.

How can hypopressives help?

Hypopressives help your body manage internal pressure more efficiently. This means less downward pressure on the pelvic floor, better support for the bladder and bowel, and improved coordination between your breathing muscles and your core. Many people also notice improved posture, reduced lower back tension, and a feeling of “lightness” in the pelvis.

What symptoms or conditions can improve?

In both men and women, hypopressives may help with:

  • Leakage when coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercising

  • Leakage associated with a sudden, strong urge to go to the toilet

  • Feeling the need to rush to the toilet frequently

  • A sensation of heaviness, dragging, or something descending

  • Ongoing pelvic pain or a pelvic floor that feels too tight and unable to relax

  • Separation of the abdominal muscles (diastasis recti)

  • Low back or sacroiliac pain linked to pressure management within the body

  • Recovery after prostate surgery or childbirth

  • A painting depicting two large birds, one pink and one light blue, on a landscape with trees and small buildings in the background.

Hypopressives are a gentle, non-invasive technique that can benefit many different conditions.

  • Painting of a reclining nude woman with dark curly hair on a green surface, surrounded by vibrant colors and abstract figures, with a potted plant on the left and a window on the wall.

They work best when tailored to the individual, following a full assessment to determine whether they are appropriate and how they can be safely integrated into your treatment plan.

Hypopressive treatment sessions are available at our Scarborough and Bridlington clinics, as well as online.
